Created for schools by teachers and industry
What is DesignIT! Ceramics?
DesignIT! Ceramics is an industry-based project for schools, mapped to the national curriculum and Diplomas. It familiarises students with the glazed ceramics industry through researching and designing products, and investigating different aspects of the industry – from the sourcing of raw materials, to the production of glazed ceramics.
The Project
The project asks school students to:
- Research and design a product.
- Identify the type of raw materials used and their origin.
- Research the production processes involved.
- Show an understanding of environmental issues in the glazed ceramics industry.
Support Material
Free, high-quality learning materials are provided, including information sheets and PowerPoint presentations as well as employer-developed resources.
Curriculum Links
The project is designed to help teach part of the specifications for GCSE and A Level Art and Design. It is also relevant to the Diplomas in Creative and Media and Manufacturing and Product Design.
Twinning with Employers
Participating schools will have access to a twinning scheme that aims to link schools with local employers, such as a local tableware designer or tile manufacturer. We will help to link you up with a local employer in the glazed ceramics industry who is keen to support you and your pupils whilst participating in DesignIT! Ceramics.
Prizes
The competition has 3 levels of entry (Year 9,10 and 12) and there will be a prize for the national winner in each year group. The best overall winning design will be manufactured by a leading glazed ceramics company. Participants need to submit their completed project to Proskills by 30th March 2012 and prize winning entries will be selected by an expert judging panel. Finalists will be informed by the end of April 2012.
